In my LAB I use two computers:
- DC2012Domain Controller (domain mcthub.local) running Windows Server 2012.
- DPMSERVER: Domain Member running Windows Server 2012, I will install SC DPM on this server.

- On DPMSERVER, install .Net Framework 3.5. Put the Windows with Windows Server 2012 into your computer , then open Server Manager , navigate  Manage - Add Roles and Features.
Select Features: Select the .NET Framework 3.5 Features check box - Click Next
This dialog asks you to specify the installation path, select Specify an alternate source path
Type D:\source\sxs - Click OK
- Click Install to start installation
After the successful installation, Click Close.

For the DPM database, DPM requires a dedicated instance of the 64-bit version of SQL Server 2012 or SQL Server 2008 R2 or SQL Server 2008 R2 SP1, Enterprise or Standard Edition. During setup, you can select either to have DPM Setup install SQL Server 2008 R2 on the DPM server, or you can specify that DPM use a remote instance of SQL Server. In my lab, I will install SQL Server 2008 R2 from the setup DVD. Setup will automatically install SQL Server 2008 R2 if it is not installed on your computer

The following prerequisites are required for installation
+ Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 with Service Pack 1 (SP1)
          + Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable
          + Windows PowerShell 2.0
+ Windows Installer 4.5 or later versions
+ Windows Single Instance Store (SIS)
          + Microsoft Application Error Reporting
Setup automatically installs these if they are not already installed or enabled. If any pre-requisites cannot be installed during setup, or if you want to install them before you install DPM, you can install them manually

Installing DPM - Run setup.exe

When the splash screen appears, click Install Data Protection Manager
Go through the License Terms and Conditions in the succeeding screen and click the checkbox to confirm. then click the OK button, a small window with a progress bar appears. The Setup program will then perform some preliminary tasks in preparation for the DPM installation.
In the welcome screen of the Data Protection Manager Setup Wizard. Just click Next.
In my case, I'm choosing the first option because, I'm going for a local installation of SQL Server on the same server as the DPM server, this option will automatically install SQL Server as well. In other situations, if you’re opting for a remote installation of SQL Server, then you should select the second option and enter the necessary information for that remote SQL server.
 Wait a moment
After the prerequisites are installed a reboot is required, so go ahead and reboot the server then start the installation again.

Now that all the prerequisites are met, you can continue with the installation, click Next.

Enter the product key and information - Click Next

If you don’t want to install DPM on the C drive you can change the path. For this example I leave the default path
Enter a password for the local user account that DPM 2012 will create on the SQL server, then click Next
Select the option Use Microsoft Update when I check for updates, to update the DPM product, then click Next.
You will be asked whether you want to participate in the Customer Experience Improvement Program, select whichever option you prefer and click Next
Click the Install button to start installing DPM 2012.
Once the wizard reports that the Data Protection Manager installation completed successfully, click the Close button

At this point you can launch the DPM 2012 Management Console from the desktop icon. In the next article I will demonstrate how to use DPM 2012 to backup and recover data on file server, Exchange Server 2013 mailbox and Hyper-V virtual machines
